NHI Heritage Families: The Espitias
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 16-Oct. 15), we’ll be celebrating families throughout the month-long celebration that help make the National Hispanic Institute a vibrant organization of community leaders.
First NHI participation:
Ricardo Espitia attended the Texas Young Leaders Conference in 2007.
And since then:
Ricardo then went to the Texas LDZ in 2008 and New York CWS in 2009. Recently, Ricardo returned from spending almost three years in the Philippines with the PeaceCorps. Younger sister Kristal attended the Texas Young Leaders Conference in 2009 and the Texas LDZ in 2010. Ricardo and Kristal have been consistently involved in the management of the NHI at Austin Great Debate team. Whereas many undergraduates turn their focus to career and academics, Ricardo in particular always made time for NHI as an important part of his life. It has not even been a month since his return from abroad and Ricardo is already making his talents and time available to NHI and the Austin community.
What the parents say about NHI:
“We would say that NHI is the best investment parents can make for their children and for the family unit as a whole. Students gain college access resources, leadership training, confidence and most importantly they are transformed into change agents and become equipped with the ability to serve communities at large. Both Ricardo and Kristal increased their confidence, and found their professional and personal passions due to NHI. Many of their successes are rooted in their NHI participation.”
