Last Thursday, the second-ever 2020 digital CWS program — billed theCWSx 2 — held its awards ceremony, concluding two days of rigorous work for another group of more than 100 students from regions across the U.S., Mexico, and Panama as they honed their understanding of the college application process.

Those days were also a learning opportunity for the NHI team, as they worked to refine their transition into digital programming.

“Like its sister program held earlier in the summer, CWSx 2 was a resounding success,” said Julio Cotto, Senior Vice President over Education and Training. “This program features some tweaks and tightening up of the process piloted a few weeks which created a smooth experience, more time for coaching, and collaboration,” “This group showed me a different generation forming. These students were filled with more questions about the future, college, career, and education than I remember previous generations having. I believe that these students not only walked about with more knowledge and connections to help them through the next months of uncertainty but they also strengthened their 21st-century communications and collaborations skills.”

These skills were forged during two intense days online working in teams staffed by college admissions officials, undergraduate mentors, and NHI trainers, individual and team champions were announced. The teams, each named for one of the 15 colleges and universities who partnered with NHI for the program, all completed a series of five games that pushed them into a thorough workshopping of key aspects of the college application: the common application, the resume, the essay, the interview, and financial decision making.

“The CWSx allowed me to work on different parts of my application that I didn’t know much about or their importance,” said Diana Zamarripa, a student at Energy Institute High School in Houston, Texas. “This program really allowed me to have a realization that I need to start getting into the college mindset and begin prioritizing my future.” She finished as one of the program’s “Major Leaguers,” finishing within the group of the top 25 highest-scoring individuals.

“My favorite part of the program was definitely working on the college interview portion because I was so confident that I was going to do many interviews for my colleges of interest, but I had never really practiced for one until the program,” she added. “It was really nice to hear the advice that my senior mentors and umpires provided me with because I now know what to do and what not to do for my future interviews, not only for college, but also for future jobs.”

The program was also an opportunity for another Major Leaguer, Yulissa Rodriguez of John B. Alexander High in Laredo, Texas, to put into practice her vision for the future. “I had the opportunity to present my academic resume, essay, and interview skills to a supportive group of individuals that offered me some excellent advice on how to improve these items,” she noted. “Furthermore, by undergoing this process, I was able to create a number of everlasting relationships with these amazing people.”

Throughout the CWSx program, and certainly during the Awards Ceremony which closed it out, the impact of this community spirit was on shining display.

At the team level, the team representing the University of North Texas won the National League, and Claremont McKenna were American League champions and emerged as the overall winners.
