The 65 students who converged on Ciudad del Saber in Panamá last month—hailing from the host nation as well as Mexico and the United States, were part of an ongoing NHI tradition. The LDZ Las Americas program, though it started in Mexico, just passed a significant milestone in the Central American nation that’s become its longtime home.

“This year marked the tenth anniversary of Las Americas in Panamá,” noted Choche Cruz, education director of the 2019 LDZ Las Americas program. “I want to take this time to thank each and every person who has made this possible: volunteers, staff,  family members, teachers, school representatives and NHI Panamá. Thank you for your time, commitment, and faith in this organization. Las Americas is what it is thanks to all of you.”

She also noted, “Throughout the program, this 2019 LALDZ delegation took risks, pushed through challenges, learned from mistakes made and inspired each other.  I could not be more proud of what was accomplished and I can’t wait to see how their communities will be impacted by each and every single one of them.”

Students participating in the program were engaged throughout. One of those students, Boris Mitchev from Colegio Brader in Panamá, Panamá, declared, “We are all here today to start a new era of young leaders,” and they all understood the importance of communication in their efforts to collaborate.

“I believe that a safe and united community is achieved based on specific and clear ideas,” observed Paulina Tejeira, a Colegio Brader student, while Ana Raquel Sanson, another Colegio Brader student, added, “I believe that to collectively achieve the goals of a community, one of the most important tools is communication.”
